Sick Pay

Guidance on Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)

It is important that you still have a conversation with your line manager to properly report your sickness.

As we are sure you can appreciate, we are experiencing a very high volume of queries regarding sickness at present. Please speak to your local branch in the first instance. If you still have a query, email the team and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We thank you for your patience at this busy time.

There have been changes made during this period of uncertainty to cover issues regarding COVID-19.

If you are Sick (with COVID-19)

Following the first 7 days, you will need to provide medical evidence to refrain from work because of COVID-19 (e.g. a sick note from doctor or 111), SSP rules apply and will be payable from day 1 (subject to qualifying conditions).

If you are Sick with COVID-19 Symptoms (not confirmed as COVID-19)

Where you self-isolate for 14 days, as advised by Government with COVID-19 symptoms, then you must get medical confirmation before the 8th day to remain away from work following the end of self-certification. SSP rules apply during this period provided you are covered by a Medical Certificate. SSP is paid (subject to qualifying conditions) from day 4 and will be backdated should the diagnosis be COVID-19.

Self Isolation/Exclusion

Where you self-isolate due to a household member having COVID-19 symptoms, but you have no symptoms yourself SSP may be payable (subject to qualifying conditions)  this will depend upon certification confirming COVID-19 of the household member.

Other situations where SSP does not apply

  • Where earnings preclude payment.
  • Where certification is not provided.
  • If you are working as a LTD Company Nurse
  • Dependent care
