Why I started a career in care. Justine, Ashford
Are you considering working in care? But not entirely sure it is for you?
This is a very common concern, for those who are still wondering whether the care sector would be a sensible career choice for them, meet Justine. A Healthcare Assistant based at our Ashford office. We asked her some questions about why she loves care work, and why she joined Nuresplus.
Why I started a career in care
I went to work with my mum one day; she worked in a residential care home, assisting residents with day to day life. I was 16 at the time and was not able to assist with much personal stuff but sat with the residents chatting and playing games, I was hooked!
I asked the manager if I could come back the following weekend. That was 24 years ago. I have worked in many different care settings since then. I think it’s just what I'm meant to do, it’s in my blood.
Why I joined Nurseplus
Having worked shifts and nights for many years, once I started my own family I found this difficult. I became stressed with the amount of paperwork involved and the lack of time I was able to give to too many people all at once.
I decided to join Nurseplus as I had received good feedback from friends and even some of their service users stating that they were flexible with hours and the training was said to be very good and plentiful. So, I took myself down to the office some 18 months ago and found all that was told to me was TRUE.
About the training at Nurseplus
Before going out on a job, before meeting any service users you need to complete a training programme. Even for those who have had training recently are asked to complete a refresher so everyone is at the same level. For those who have never worked in care, this is a valuable and fantastic start. Training can be fun and a great way to meet others and share problems and questions.
Workbook training is available; a workbook is sent to you for you to complete at home and when you’re done, pop it in the post. Easy!
Lots of training is available covering many different things depending on your interests and you can always ask for training at any time. The friendly staff in the office are happy to help or just ask when doing your appraisals.
What I like about working for Nurseplus
The flexibility of hours, times and days you work and work is plentiful
The 24-hour support and feedback you receive. They actually tell you “good job” which is not often heard these days
The availability of training
The amount of paperwork is less. You still need to do it but you don't feel bogged down and you even get training on it
The variation in care work
