Healthcare Management Jobs | Rhys' Journey From Carer to Area Manager
Rhys started with Nurseplus as an agency worker and in only eight short years has made his way to Area Manager!
Here he tells us about the journey from carer to Area Manager, why he choose to work in care, and what he’s achieved during his time at Nurseplus.
When did you start working in Care?
I first started my career in care in a small residential home. After a year I decided I wanted to try the different options available, so went into agency work with Nurseplus.
The first role I had at Nurseplus was an Agency Worker role. I did a few shifts on the establishment side of the business, but primarily I worked within Homecare, visiting individuals' homes making visits that could last from just 15-minute to an hour and went visiting different homes day-to-day.
How did you become a Branch Manager?
When I worked in domiciliary care services I had a motorbike and used to get quite wet on rainy days, so I would sit in the branch to remain dry and chat with the office staff there. Whilst I was there I expressed interest in becoming a field supervisor, so ended up being given a bit more responsibility. I then progressed to being a coordinator and completed my NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care through Nurseplus.
Next, I moved on to a senior coordinator job where I was responsible for coordinators, rotas, client assessments, and Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections. I then applied for a role to join the Quality Assurance team and was successful. I became responsible for overseeing a portfolio of 16 branches across the UK, where I would travel and carry out inspections in line with CQC regulations, I also provided training for coordinators and taught them about compliance.
During this time I was also a ‘Super User’ in the rollout of a new system, meaning I could and did run training on how to the new system, organised the set-up and launch dates from start to finish.
It was then that a job opportunity became available for a Branch Manager in Nurseplus Salisbury. I had wanted to get back into operations and has also managed to acheive my Level 5 in Management and Leadership in a Health and Social Care Setting which is amazing considering before I started with Nurseplus I only had GCSE’s to my name.
What made you want to progress?
I am very career driven and often want to acheive more in my life. I love having goals and having to push myself to meet them and Nurseplus has given me the tools to be able to do that. There is fantastic career development opportunity at Nurseplus which I’ve experienced myself.
I do feel that I can make a difference as well at Nurseplus, I feel my opinion is valued and I feel that I can talk to my operations director, even the CEO, and put my point of view across.
What qualifications have you achieved with Nurseplus?
I’ve achieved an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and a Level 5 in Leadership and Management in a Health and Social Care Setting.
I’ve done various training courses as well as distance learning including my onboarding training and medication training. I’ve also learned how to identify Right to Work, what requirements need to met for compliance, what CQC regulations there are, and everything that goes along with it.
Why did you choose Nurseplus?
I chose Nurseplus because there was a really nice atmosphere. I had applied to work with a few different agencies, but Nurseplus seemed the best one to work for. The office team were really friendly, the recruitment process was quick and seamless and they offered a really good, in-depth training programme that not a lot of other agencies did.
How did you find the training?
I found the training very informative. Nurseplus invests so much into the training that we offer to provide the best staff out there. It was also really easy to start and complete the qualifications, it was as simple as telling your line manager you want to do them and they will enroll you in the course.
My NVQ Level 2 was completed within a year and my Level 5 was completed within a year and a half. The process was seamless and the content was really interesting to learn about as well.
Would you recommend Nurseplus?
I would definitely recommend Nurseplus for career progression. I know many people that have started as Branch Managers and are now in the senior ops team. I started as an agency worker and carer, was trusted with various leadership positions and moved be a Branch Manager. Today I have acheived another self set goal of becomming an Area Manager, which was made entirely possible with the support, encouragement and access to training provided by Nurseplus.
