CPI Training: What is it and How can it Benefit Healthcare Providers?
CPI Training: What is it?
In healthcare, ensuring safety is key. Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Training provides our care staff with vital tools to de-escalate and prevent crisis situations. This means a safer environment for the teams we support and the people we care for. Through CPI training, Nurseplus care staff learn to recognise early warning signs of distress and employ techniques that prioritise empathy and understanding.
Here are the 6 Stages of Crisis
Our Stand on CPI Training
Here at Nurseplus, we're always keen to improve the skill set of our care staff to ensure they are well-rounded and ready to react in all types of care settings. We are excited to have begun a focused campaign that encourages staff to enroll in CPI training which is taking part up and down our network of community branches. This initiative has been put in place to ensure all our care staff are well-prepared to apply evidence-based techniques to handle conflicts, prevent crises, and maintain an atmosphere of care, well-being, safety, and security.
Could Your Setting Benefit from CPI Trained Staff?
From mental health and rehabilitation facilities to acute hospital environments and community care services, Nurseplus care staff with CPI training are able to:
Manage challenging behaviour
Recognise and prevent workplace violence
Handle escalating behaviours safely
We believe by investing in CPI training for our staff, we are better equipped tohelp you promote the dignity of those in your care, boost the confidence in your support teams, and ensure your service delivers consistent, compassionate care. You'll also be gaining access to trained care staff with vital skills that can support organisations as they build safer environments for both those they care for and their long-term employees.
Nurseplus has taken time to look at the benefits of CPI training for the care partners we work with. By equipping our staff with CPI training we are giving them the confidence they need to build trust and rapport with those they work with and care for. We want to enhance the quality of care we deliver so we can contribute towards positive workplace cultures where everyone feels valued and respected. As a result, we know that our care partners and those they care for will experience improved outcomes, reduced incidents of aggression, and a more harmonious atmosphere when working with Nurseplus CPI Trained care staff.
CPI Training Tackling Frequent Challenges
We all know that healthcare workplaces can be unpredictable and that the potential for aggression or violence is common. By encouraging our care teams to enroll in CPI training we are giving them the tools to spot early signs of escalation and intervene properly, reducing risks for those we are caring for and working with.
CPI Training in Action
When working in a psychiatric ward, a patient may begin to exhibit signs of agitation, such as pacing or raising their voice. Staff trained in CPI can recognise these behaviors as potential indicators of escalating aggression and would know to employ de-escalation techniques, such as calmly engaging the patient in conversation or offering a quiet space to help them regain composure.
In a busy emergency room a family member of a patient is feeling overwhelmed and frustrated due to long wait times. Without proper intervention, this frustration could escalate into aggressive behavior towards staff. CPI trained personnel can employ active listening and empathy to address the concerns of the family member, helping to diffuse the situation before it escalates further.
A resident in a long term care facility may become upset after a change in routine or when they are unable to participate in a preferred activity. Recognising the signs of distress, staff can implement individualised strategies from their CPI training, such as redirecting the resident’s attention to a different activity or involving them in a calming exercise, which can effectively prevent an outburst or aggressive behavior.
It's also common for continued experiences with mismanaged, and challenging care situations to lead to work-related stress, staff burnout, and increased turnover. At Nurseplus we're confident that by offering our care partners access to CPI trained staff we can:
bolster overall staff well-being
encourage job satisfaction
and improve staff retention
Nurseplus CPI trained staff will use their skills to support team-building activities, focused communication skills, and conflict resolution, which could help promote a sense of camaraderie among your permanent team members.
