CPI Training Tackling Frequent Challenges

We all know that healthcare workplaces can be unpredictable and that the potential for aggression or violence is common. By encouraging our care teams to enroll in CPI training we are giving them the tools to spot early signs of escalation and intervene properly, reducing risks for those we are caring for and working with.

CPI Training in Action

When working in a psychiatric ward, a patient may begin to exhibit signs of agitation, such as pacing or raising their voice. Staff trained in CPI can recognise these behaviors as potential indicators of escalating aggression and would know to employ de-escalation techniques, such as calmly engaging the patient in conversation or offering a quiet space to help them regain composure.

In a busy emergency room a family member of a patient is feeling overwhelmed and frustrated due to long wait times. Without proper intervention, this frustration could escalate into aggressive behavior towards staff. CPI trained personnel can employ active listening and empathy to address the concerns of the family member, helping to diffuse the situation before it escalates further.

A resident in a long term care facility may become upset after a change in routine or when they are unable to participate in a preferred activity. Recognising the signs of distress, staff can implement individualised strategies from their CPI training, such as redirecting the resident’s attention to a different activity or involving them in a calming exercise, which can effectively prevent an outburst or aggressive behavior.
